Friday, January 22, marked the grand opening of the new Kenesaw School addition. On March 11, 2008, the historical passing of a mail-in ballot approved the bond for new additions to KHS including a new gymnasium and track. After almost two years the new gym was opened to the public, and the track facility should be finished by spring.
On January 18, the student body (K-12) toured the new addition. As the students entered the new facility, they were astounded and amazed at the new commons area, the shiny new gym floors, the giant royal blue bleachers, and the new sound system! The basketball team held basketball practice in the gym for the first time Monday, January 18.
For the grand opening the Kenesaw junior varsity and varsity basketball teams met Franklin. Though anyone wearing blue got in free to watch the basketball game, all visitors were welcomed "free of charge". The Kenesaw choir sang the National Anthem as American Legion representatives presented the colors. The flag will hang in the new gym. Several fans wore painted faces, and some donned old basketball uniforms. The student council worked at the new concession stand, and fans could enjoy their food in the new commons area as they viewed the games on the two new 46-inch Sony flat-screen televisions. Half time entertainment included a fourth and fifth grade basketball exhibition game during the varsity girls' game and the dance squad routine during the varsity boys' game. Parents of the players and student managers were recognized between the two games.
The successful night was highlighted during the grand opening festivities as the Blue Devils posted four wins over the visiting Franklin Flyers. The junior varsity girls, the junior varsity boys, the varsity girls, and the varsity boys basketball teams won their first games in the new facility. With excitement and anticipation the Blue Devils will host the first rounds of the girls and boys TVC competition on February 1 and 2. They will host Red Cloud on February 9 for the last home basketball game this season in the new gym, the new home of the Kenesaw Blue Devils. The expectations are high for use of this new facility by the school and community as they plan for the 2010 graduation ceremony.
