The Kenesaw/Shelton wrestling team continues racking up many achievements at all their meets. At most meets at least one member places, and the team usually takes first or second.
On December 21, the team took first with a score of 123 at the Kenesaw Quad. Nick Code (103) participated in two matches and won both. Cogan Thompson (160) came out winning two of the three matches in which he wrestled. Josh Powell (215) won his first match with a pin and won his second match with a 7-2 decision.
The Wood River Duals took place on December 29. The team went 2-3 in duals, placing fourth overall. Kenesaw/Shelton won over Milford and Greeley Wohlbach/Cedar Rapids.
For the first meet of 2010, the boys traveled to Amherst and took second place with 150 points. Nick (103) was paired up against some tough competition and lost his two matches of the day. Cogan Thompson (152) won his first match with a 6-5 decision, but fell to an Amherst wrestler in his second match and a fellow teammate in his third match. Josh Powell (215) won his three matches of the day by pinning all of his opponents in the first period.
The Kenesaw/Shelton Invite was held at Shelton on January 16. Nick (103) placed fourth in the 103 pound weight class with a 2-2 record for the day. Cogan Thompson (152) made it to the semifinals with two wins, but lost to a Doniphan-Trumball wrestler who pinned him in the second period. Cogan went on to win the consolation bracket and placed third overall in the 152 pound weight class. Josh Powell sailed through his matches, winning them both with a pin in the first period. Josh took first place in the 215-pound weight bracket. The team finished the meet with a first place trophy.
Starting on Thursday, January 21, the boys had a whirlwind weekend of non-stop wrestling. On Thursday the team traveled to Sandy Creek to participate in the Twin Valley Conference. The Kenesaw/Shelton team placed first with 88 points. Nick (103) took first in the 103 pound weight class, and Josh (215) took first in the 215 pound weight class. The next night the team traveled to Pender. At the dual the team won over Pender (44-33) The wrestling weekend came to an end on Saturday at the Oakland/Craig Invite. The team placed fourth out of seventeen teams with 154 points. Nick (103) with 0-2 on the day. Cogan (152) lost his first match in overtime with an 11-9 decision. He won his second match with a pin in the first period, but lost his third match with a 6-2 decision. Josh (215) won his first two matches, but lost his third with a 3-1 decision. he went on to win the consolation bracket and placed third in the 215-pound weight class.
