Nine girls and eleven boys make for a total of twenty students in the fourth grade class which is taught by Mrs. Warner. Their schedule closely resembles that of the other elementary classes: social studies, spelling, reading, science, math, and English. They also participate in physical education, art, music, guidance, library skills, and computers. One major difference, however, is the change in classrooms.
For math, social studies, and science, the upper elementary grades switch classrooms. The fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Warner, teaches math; the fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Archer, teaches social studies; the sixth grade teacher, Mr. Evans, teaches science. At an appointed time each day, grades four through six go to a different classroom to learn a different subject accordingly.
The skills that this year's fourth graders have focused on mastering are staying organized and using their time wisely. To stay organized and on task, the students are given planners to fill out each morning that include all of their subjects of study. Fourth grade is also the first year that the students are assigned lockers. Another thing the students are taught is to work diligently. They are given a study hall at the end of the day. If they use their time wisely, the fourth graders are able to get most of their homework done.
The fourth graders possess a variety of talents. They are skilled academically as well as very independent and task-driven. Things don't get to serious, though. They also have a great sense of humor. "We do have fun," said Mrs. Warner. "We joke around with each other."
