What do I do if I know a child who is struggling in any area?

by Toni Arehart

February 05, 2010

Kenesaw Public School has a policy that follows the Student Assistance Team (SAT) process.

REFERRAL PROCESS

Pre-Kindergarten:

Option 1: Talk to your doctor about your concerns. The doctor may/may not make a referral.

Option 2: Contact the Adams County School District Preschool office: 1-800-782-7850.

Student is enrolled in school:

Teacher: The classroom teacher will notify the parents about their concerns.

Parent: Talk to the teacher and specifically tell them your concerns about the child.

INTERVENTIONS

*There may be a meeting with the parents and the classroom teacher to determine if interventions are needed.

*Scenario 1: The teacher will offer extra support within the classroom. Interventions were implemented and successful.

*Scenario 2: The teacher has tried some interventions and monitored student progress. The interventions are not successful.

*The classroom teacher completes a referral to SAT (Student Assistance Team - a team of teachers).

*There will be a SAT Meeting: Parents invited, Classroom Teacher, SAT Chair, and Others.

*The team reviews the intervention and results.

*The team will determine an intervention plan.

*The plan will be implemented for 3-4 weeks (monitor student progress).

-If the intervention is successful, continue to monitor student progress.

-If no improvement, the team will modify the intervention. Multiple interventions are                   implemented.

EVALUATION

If no success, the student is referred to a Multidisciplinary Team for evaluation.
